Bio
Born in 1967 in rural western Pennsylvania, Grossman moved to Kansas City in 1988 to work as an illustrator for Hallmark Cards, Inc., until 1995. She fell in love with Kansas’s tallgrass prairies and over the last thirty years, has established herself as a prominent painter and printmaker of eastern Kansas’s open prairie spaces and the Kansas River valley. With over thirty solo shows around the country, Grossman has evolved a luminous, minimalist plein air style, focusing on the horizon and subtle shifts in light and color, weather and season.
Grossman earned degrees from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where she’s made her home since 1996. Over two thousand of her works have been placed into public, private, corporate, and museum collections, including the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas in Lawrence; the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas; the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas; the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in Saint Joseph, Missouri; and the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.
Grossman is a 2019 Phoenix Award recipient, an honor from the City of Lawrence for artistic achievement, and a 2009 recipient of the Kansas Arts Commission’s Mid-Career Fellowship. She has completed numerous significant commissions including large canvases for Emprise Bank, the Chiefs Art Program at Arrowhead Stadium, the H & R Block Center, all in Kansas City, and the Kansas University School of Business and Lawrence Memorial Hospital West, in Lawrence. Grossman has also served in eight National Park artist residencies, primarily in the American Southwest and one in the Tongass National Forest, Juneau, Alaska.
Grossman’s work has been represented by galleries in cities across the country including Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Santa Fe. She is currently represented by Haw Contemporary in Kansas City, Missouri, and SNW Gallery, in Manhattan, Kansas.
Her work can be viewed on her website, lisagrossmanart.com, as well as her gallery websites, hawcontemporary.com and snwgallery.com. in the national parks. She is represented by Haw/Contemporary in Kansas City, Missouri, and SNW Gallery, in Manhattan, Kansas.
